Dog's heartworm test

If you have not had your dog on heartworm prevention during the winter months, don’t forget to make an appointment for your dog's heartworm test. It may look like winter is here to stay, but spring is just around the corner! Dogs should be tested before starting them on any prevention program. Dogs testing negative should be started on their heartworm pills around April (depending on where you live), and remain on them through December. Many vets suggest treating year round. Heartworm prevention medications also keep your pet free from several other types of worms. If you treat year round, you will still need to have your dog tested for heartworm every other year.
It is also a good idea to check your records and find out when your dog is due for his/her routine vaccinations. If you are worried about vaccinating your dog too often, antibody tests are available in order to determine if you dog has a sufficient antibody titer. Do not assume that you dog is protected just because it has been vaccinated before. Antibody protection wears off, and dogs, just like people, need booster shots to bolster their immune system.
As long as you are checking your records…is it time to renew your dog's license? If your dog is spayed or neutered, you may need to take along a copy of your spay/neuter certificate to the licensing bureau. In certain states and localities licensing agencies may also require that you provide evidence of a current rabies and/or other vaccinations in order to obtain a license. It is also a good idea to keep a copy of your dog’s rabies certificate in the car. Many public parks and camp grounds require proof of vaccination when you travel with your pets.
