When I walk my dog outside, he sometimes scratches his paws on the ground like a charging bull. What does this mean?
The behavior you are observing, sometimes called "scat kicking," is thought by most behaviorists to be a marking behavior. Dogs may kick after eliminating because of a residual instinctive drive to spread feces or to create a scratched up "visual display" helping to draw attention to the place their feces "mark," or perhaps to mark the area further with the scents produced by sweat glands between their toes. But it is most assuredly a marking behavior, a method for your dog to announce to real and imagined competition "I was here!"
