Giving a pill to a sick dog can be a frustrating experience. It is very important that a dog owner has the ability to routinely open their dog's mouth and look into it and place their fingers into the mouth.

• Get started doing this before it is necessary to medicate the dog by mouth. When you have the confidence that its OK to have your fingers in your dog's mouth, place one hand around nose and into the mouth.
• Apply a small amount of pressure by raising the head upward.
• With the pill between the first and second fingers of the other hand, drop the pill on the back of the tongue and close the mouth.
• Rub the throat to encourage the pill to be swallowed.
• Sometimes a light pinching of the nose forces the dog to swallow.
• Start this process early in the dog's life.
• Give pieces of food this way to get your dog accustomed to this process.
