Handle injured dog
Handle injured dog
The very first objective is to determine the severity of the injury. A dog that is injured can not be trusted - it can and often will bite you! Knowing this, muzzle the dog (refer to "How To" muzzle) before you start your examination.
The following is a quick list of vital signs to check:
- Is the dog breathing normally? Without difficulty?
- Does the dog appear to be in pain?
- Where is the pain located?
- Can the dog walk on all 4 legs?
- Can the dog lay down and get back up without pain?
- Are there any lacerations or cuts?
- Is the dog bleeding from the mouth?
- Does your dog know you and respond to you?
With results from this survey, call your veterinarian for direction as to what needs to be done at this time. If there is bleeding, attempt to stop it using pressure bandages.
