My dog eats grass on a daily basis
My dog eats grass on a daily basis. Does this mean she has an upset stomach or she is lacking in some minerals or vitamins? Is it OK for her to do this?
It seems just about all dogs eat grass at one time or another. This might be because they simply like it or, more likely, because it's in reaction to some sort of stomach upset. In the latter case, they seek out long-stemmed blades that irritate the stomach and cause vomiting. In persistent cases of grass eating, the dog should be examined for internal parasites or an intestinal infection. I have known a few dogs over the years that would eat grass ritualistically and then vomit yellow, bilious stomach acid at the same time every day. When these dogs were fed two meals per day rather than one, the grass eating and resulting vomiting behaviors stopped. While eating grass doesn't pose any direct threat to your dog's health, it may point to an underlying problem. Ask your veterinarian about a safe dose of antacid if other health conditions are ruled out.
