female chocolate Labrador Retriever constantly licking the floor and/or the carpet
My dog, Hershey, is a female chocolate Labrador Retriever. She is constantly licking the floor and/or the carpet. Why does she do this? We have another dog, a male yellow Lab, that never does this. Is her licking a nervous reaction? Both dogs are house dogs and get their fair share of exercise. What's her problem?
Although it may have an attention-seeking element to it, which your dog may have learned inadvertently from family members' reactions to her weird behavior, I'd guess your dog's licking is a symptom indicating an obsessive-compulsive disorder. Although she now may lick in part to get a reaction, she began licking before she ever learned people might respond to her behavior. Many dogs will lick floors and carpeting in reaction to extreme nausea, but I doubt your dog is feeling nauseated all of the time! Seek medical attention from a veterinary behaviorist who can examine your dog and help you with both the medical and psychological aspects of her condition.
