Diseases that have been found to be contagious from the dog to man
There are several diseases that have been found to be contagious from the dog to man:
- Scabies - a mite that causes severe itching in man.
- Roundworms - these intestinal parasites of the dog can be found in abnormal places when they infect man. They can be very dangerous.
- Hookworms - these worms can penetrate the feet of people walking bare foot in soil containing the parasites.
- Ringworm - this is a fungus that can be spread by direct contact with an infected dog (or cat).
- Campylobacter - this is a bacteria that causes a severe diarrhea in man.
- Giardia - this is a protozoan parasite that is passed from the dog to people by direct contact or through water contamination.
- Cryptosporidiosis - a protozoan disease that causes severe diarrhea in people. The role of dogs in this disease is not yet understood.
- Coccidiosis - this protozoan disease causes birth defects in the unborn human when the mother is exposed to the disease during her pregnancy.
- Rabies - (discussed separately in program) Most of these diseases can be avoided by using good sanitation.
The use of well cooked food and safe water are helpful. Stay away from dogs or wild animals that you contact.
