Sedate Dog For Overseas Flight?

I will be moving overseas soon and plan to take my dog, a two year old boxer. Although he is a white boxer with one blue eye he has normal vision and hearing and is otherwise healthy. The plane trip will be 12-13 hours long? Should I arrange to have him partly sedated or give him a small dose of sleeping pills to enable him to endure that amount of time cooped up in a crate in the plane's hold?

I do not recommend that you sedate your pooch for a long flight, when he wakes up he could become disorientated and that could create a problem for him in a very unfamiliar place. Make sure to rehearse him being in the crate. Put him the crate for a about a half hour and then increase the time that he spends in the crate. Start doing this several weeks before the actual flight. This way he is accustommed to being in the crate and will feel more comfortable. Make sure to write on the crate, “Live Animal” and the phone number of the place that you are ultimately going. Make sure to tell everyone that is employed by the airline (that you come in contact with) that you have your pet in the cargo hold of the plane so that they are aware of your pooch. Upon landing get to the pick up area as soon as you can to let your pooch out so he can relieve himself and exercise and stretch. Pets are shipped daily around the world and they do well. The time of year that you travel has a lot to do with his comfort level. Also make sure to have the proper paperwork done. Each country has its own restrictions and requirements. You will need a health certificate, so contact your vet as to the required health information.
