Good Dog for Toddler

I have a one year child and I want to get a dog. What type of dog is compatible with toddlers? My home has a nice back yard and I would like a dog that is medium in size. Any suggestions?

Great question! When my children were small we had Shelties-three of them to be exact. Of course that is my first choice because I had such good luck with them. There are several types of dogs that make wonderful pets that get along great with kids. I will list several here, but keep in mind that some individual dogs may have questionable blood lines and can be nippy or might not be as compatible as the group as a whole. Some of those breeds are Cocker Spaniels (watch the blood line), Japanese Chin (under rated companion dog) Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retriever ( another of my favorites, watch the blood lines) Sheltie, Collie. Most of the Terrier family is good. Another very popular kid dog is the Pug, great companion dog. Don't over look the Boxer, a very sweet dog. As you can see there are so many choices. I have not even listed them all. Don't over look the Random breed (Mixed breed) crowd as well. You can visit with these dogs at the shelter. I would try to get a puppy or a young dog so that you can raise the kids and the pup together. Good luck in your choice and be sure to pick up a book on different breeds of dogs like the ASPCA's Complete Guide to Dogs. You can read about several different types of pooches and try to narrow your choices down.
