16 Week Old Dog With Bladder Problem

I have a 16 week old shepard, lab mix that seems to not have any control over his bladder. He gets excited and just leaks all over the place. It seems to me that he doesn't even know that he is doing it. I don't punish him for it- I think that would make it worse. Is there any thing I can do about this or will he just out grow it. He seems to have a low ego system going. Is this connected somehow?

I believe that this can be submissive urination or just the fact that he is so young. Young dogs can urinate when they get excited and do in fact outgrow it. Submissive urination can be a problem that can be dealt with, with proper training. At six months of age I would do two things, have him neutered and enroll him in obedience training classes.

These classes can help with the submission situation. You may also have to have a few private classes to help you if this is situation is more advanced or behaviorally related. In the meanwhile I would try to set him up to succeed. Try not to get him to excited. If this happens for example when you come home then try not to get him to excited and ease in to greeting him later after you get home. Take him out side and play with him out side and then take him and practice having him sit and stay. Give him a treat for his good behavior.
