Tail Gate Trouble

Tail Gate Trouble

Do you own a vehicle with a Tailgate? Do you insist that your dog(s)jump up and down from the tailgate when going afield? Have you ever seen anyone so insistent that their dog load themselves, that they actually pull the dog off the tailgate by the collar? This activity may be jeopardizing the dog's health.

There are multiple reasons not to insist on this "skill":

  • Puppies are generally afraid of heights. Demanding they jump can be extremely frightening and can stifle their enthusiasm to hunt or explore
  • Your dog can easily injure it's back, hips, legs or feet. All dogs are vulnerable to these risks, especially puppies and older dogs
  • Your dog can cause internal or muscular damage if it hits the corner of the tailgate while jumping
  • By encouraging your dog to jump from the tailgate, may reinforce the dogs desire to leave your vehicle at inappropriate times.
