This is not an issue just for people. It is an essential aspect of your dog's development. "Socialization," is the process of introducing your dog to other people, dogs and environments. What it all boils down to is the fact that your pup needs the exposure and companionship of people and dogs. It also needs to know what it can and can't do.

Elements of socializing your dog include:

• Introduction to other dogs - Your pup needs the companionship of other dogs and also needs to learn where it fits in the pecking order of other dogs
• Introduction to other people - Your pup needs to learn what is acceptable behavior around other people. He/she may rule the roost at your own home, but will have to learn its limitations when in someone else's home or in a public place.
• Introduction to environments outside the home. Your pup is naturally curious. So give him a chance to snoop around and discover the world. Keep it safe though. Keep them on a lead or in a controlled area, so your pup doesn't wander off.
• Basic obedience training. The correct age to start training your dog is s topic for debate. It is possible to hamper a dog's development by expecting too much from them at too young an age. Biting, potty training and learning to come are all lessons that can be taught from day one. Reinforcing positive behavior and discouraging negative behavior is essential as your pup gets older.
