Choose your vet - Selecting a veterinarian
Choose your vet
Selecting a veterinarian can be a rewarding experience if you follow some rules:
- Don't be afraid to ask questions about the staff and facility.
- Ask your neighbors which veterinary hospitals they prefer and WHY. Ask several people.
- When you have selected 2 or 3 practices, call and ask for a visitation to their facility.
- Was the receptionist easy to talk to?
- Friendly?
- Helpful?
Interested in your needs?
- When visiting the hospital, determine if the areas are clean and sanitary, have good working space, and good ventilation (does it smell?
- There are several questions that you can ask the staff or the veterinarian:
- Do they provide emergency services?
- Does the hospital provide the latest in anesthesia, a separate surgery suite, and radiology (X-ray) facilities?
- Ask if fees are quoted for the services requested by the pet owner?
- In difficult medical cases, do they refer to other hospitals or specialty practices?
You have to feel comfortable with the hospital and veterinarian that you choose. If you did not have a good experience, don't hesitate going through the selection process again.
