Heartworm symptoms in dogs
Heartworm symptoms in dogs and cats
When heartworm symptoms occur in the dog, worms are found in the right side of the heart and lung tissue.
These are some of the main symptoms:
1. Coughing - this is the result of irritation to the lungs.
2. Weakness - blood flow to the muscles is reduced and there is restricted oxygen intake.
3. Shortness of breath/ exercise intolerance - because of the worm presence, the blood can't get to the lungs and back to the body without being restricted. This forces the dog to breathe harder.
4. Kidney failure - after the worms have been there a long time, the kidneys fail because of poor blood flow through them and a breakdown of the red blood cells.
This is why it is important to detect the presence of the worms as soon as possible. Treatment works much better if the lungs, heat, kidneys and liver have not been damaged.
