Diagnose dogs illnesses

Is your dog sick?
When determining if your dog has been injured or is sick, there is a basic approach to follow that can shorten the diagnostic process. If the injury or symptom is obvious, go to the "Keyword" in the program and allow it to guide you.

An example of an injury is a cut pad on the foot. The keyword is "cut pad". By entering "cut pad" into the program, you will be instructed on what needs to be done with this injury. If the symptom is seizuring of your dog, identify a word related to the action or condition. The keyword would then be "seizure" or "fit" with the program guiding you on how to respond to this symptom. Often your pet will give you an indication that something is wrong. This may just be a feeling on your part that something has changed.

You may not know where to start looking for the changes that have taken place. In the following discussion, you will be given an outline used by many veterinarians when evaluating a pet.

Many diseases and/or injuries are identified by a good assessment using the following procedure:

1) Examine your dog for any injuries, swellings and/or painful area.If something is found, look for the keyword which best fits the condition found.

2) Take the dog's temperature. (Review "How To" take a temperature) Determine if there is a fever (above normal) or a low temperature (below normal).

3) Identify any changes in body function or associated conditions:
a. Is there any change in appetite?
b. Is there any change in bowel function? Any vomiting?
c. Is there any change in breathing pattern or condition?
d. Is there any change in water intake?
e. Has the sleeping pattern changed?

4) Identify any changes in behavior and/or personality. Ask yourself these questions:
a. Is there a change in aggressiveness?
b. Is there any change in response to your commands?
c. Does your dog want to withdraw or isolate itself?
d. Is there a loss of energy in your dog?
e. Does your dog appear weak?

5) After you've determined the behavioral or body function change, try to determine if the dog has been exposed to anything in the environment. Ask yourself the following questions:
a. Have there been changes in the diet?
b.Has the dog been exposed to any toxins or poisons?
c. If you find a physical injury, what may have caused it?
d. Has your dog been exposed to something new or threatening? Is there a new dog? Thunderstorms, etc.

Follow the program and it will help you find a solution.
