Evaluate a dogs wound
Evaluate a dogs wound
If your dog has a wound or cut, your first objective is to determine the severity of that wound. It is always a good safety precaution to muzzle your dog (see "How to" Muzzle) before the examination.
What you need to determine is whether your dog is injured severely enough to see the veterinarian. If there is bleeding, apply a pressure bandage if possible before transporting to the veterinary hospital.
If there is minimal bleeding, you may want to take care of the wound if it is in one of the following categories:
- A clean, shallow cut on the pad.
- A clean cut of the skin less than 0.5 inches in length.
- A wound that only involves the skin.
- A wound that does not open when the dog moves.
- When cleaning the wound, use a mild detergent on any area except around the eyes.
- Follow this with liberal flushing (hydrogen peroxide). If the wound is around the eye, wash the area liberally with warm water.
