4 years old Rottweiler urinating in the house,

My dog 4 years old Rottweiler has recently started urinating in the house, particularly when another dog walks past or when someone comes to the door. I am convinced he does it to mark his territory. He has not been neutered, and we've been told that once this behavior starts, it is too late to neuter him. Do you think neutering would help? Is there anything else we could try?

Neutering helps in approximately 60 percent of the cases in which adult dogs are castrated after marking behavior has begun. I'd say it is worth a shot. It takes about four weeks for residual hormones to stop having an effect. At that point you can deal with the remaining marking behavior by using behavioral training. This would require the help of a behaviorist; ask your veterinarian for a referral, or write back telling me your nearest city and I'll try to refer you. It would be pointless to try to modify behavior that is biologically based; if his hormones are driving him, he can't help it. Establishing good leadership and improved socialization might help. This would be best accomplished by enrolling in an obedience class. Make sure the methods being used teach owners to lead but not punish their dogs. Positive methods are the only ones that are appropriate. This applies to recommendations that you find in books as well. There are too many good dog training books for me to list; plan on spending an afternoon in your library or local bookstore, and weed through them. Place any books that advise harsh tactics and punishment in your "Not worth reading" pile!
