2-year-old Miniature Dachshund eating habit
My dog, a 2-year-old Miniature Dachshund, loves to play in the yard, but when he is given a plain piece of bread he buries it in the dirt. If the bread has butter on it he does not. Bread is the only thing he buries. Why?
Typically when people think of dogs burying things the word "bones," not "bread," comes to mind. But the behavioral drive is the same. Like squirrels that hoard nuts, creating a safe cache for lean times, domestic dogs frequently retain and demonstrate similar food-storage practice. Dogs have been observed burying food and/or bones in between sofa cushions or under blankets, and some even attempt to dig holes and "bury" objects in floors. When dogs fail at creating holes in the carpet, some have actually dragged materials such as blankets and newspapers to cover possessions. One of my own dogs buried a toy, a rubber frog I had asked her to retrieve. For some reason she resisted before finally obeying me. After training, when allowed to go play in the yard, she carried the frog to my garden, dug a hole and buried it. I was so intrigued watching from my window I didn't stop her, and to this day the memory makes me laugh. In your dog's case, my guess is he eats the bread with butter, right? Butter makes it better (I should be in advertising). Plain old bread is good enough to keep, and to not allow imagined competition to have, but not inspiring enough to eat--at least not at the moment. You might be about to give out a buttered piece! The funny thing is, many dogs bury food or bones and then about forget them, never returning to dig them up. Either we humans are doing a good job of keeping our dogs from feeling needy or so much for "survival of the fittest"!
