Identify Lice/ Ticks/ Mites/ Fleas on dogs
Lice/ Ticks/ Mites/ Fleas on dogs are a problem from coast to coast. These parasites can be difficult to see early in the infestation of your dog.
The following is a list of rules to help you find them:
- Assume there are fleas if the dog is itching or chewing on itself. Fleas are small brown to black wingless insects which resemble a seed. They do not fly but hop.
- Look for the fleas on the lower back near the tail.
- Turn the dog over and examine the areas on the belly and between the legs; you will see them moving on the hairless areas.
- Look for flea dirt. This is black pepper-like material next to the skin. Take some of this material and add water to it. If it turns red, you know it is "flea" dirt.
- Purchase a flea comb. This is a comb with very fine teeth located close together. When fleas are in the hair, the comb traps them for your identification.
- Methods and products for killing fleas on the dog and in the living area of the dog are presented in the Keyword list under fleas.
