Pick a dog house
Pick a dog house
Selecting the correct dog house for the weather conditions in your part of the country can be challenging. Answering the following questions may give you some direction:
- The dog house has to be large enough for your dog to stretch out and be comfortable while inside.
- The roof has to provide protection from the elements.
- The floor has to be solid so that bedding will stay in place.
- A few well placed holes (small bore size) may be necessary to allow water that gets in to run out the bottom.
- The sides cannot allow the wind to blow through or moisture to penetrate to the inside.
- The back needs to be convertible: partially open in the summer (with a screen in the open area) and closed in the winter. A small vent at the top is necessary in the winter.
- The front should have a door that your dog can easily walk through.
- Mosquito netting can be used in the summer as a door cover.
- In the winter heavy burlap can be used to cover the entrance.
- If you can't find a dog house, build one to meet the needs of your dog.
