Pick dog treats

  • When you go to your local pet supply store to purchase treats for your dog, there will be many varieties and sizes.
  • There will be natural products and composite products.
  • A lot of these items will indicate one flavor or another.
  • Some will be vitamin enriched and others very high in protein and/or fat.
  • What you have to determine is how these treats are going to be used.

The following is a list of which treats can be used for various reasons:

  • For training your dog, small, highly flavored and easily chewed treats should be used. Beef jerky treats, small biscuits, and freeze dried liver treats are good choices.
  • Vitamin and mineral supplements are available in the form of a treat. Pet Tabs (R) are an example of this type of treat.
  • Large dog bones can be used to replace part of the dog's diet.
  • Large rawhide chewier are good for the health of the dog's teeth.
  • They come in all flavors.
  • Sterile natural beef bones (in all flavors) are enjoyed by the dog.
  • Make sure they are not eaten too rapidly because intestinal irritation can develop.
  • Any appropriate chew toy can be used for a young dog who likes to chew and has to learn to chew on a dog toy instead of an owner's shoe!Try to choose treats that match the size of your dog.
  • Don't expect a toy poodle to enjoy a 10" beef bone.
  • Never forget that these treats are often very high in calories.
  • This adds to the total food intake.
  • Dogs can get FAT on treats.
