Protect your dog in season
Protect your dog in season
The female dog comes into season (heat) usually 2 times per year. Protecting this female when she is in heat from male dogs can be very challenging. Remember, it is natural for breeding to take place even when that is not on your agenda.
Protecting a female can be done in 2 ways:
- Use birth control medications.
- Keep the female confined so the males cannot get to her.
This is often easier said than done. There are times when a male dog will climb 8 foot fences, chew through wire gates, go through screen doors into homes to get to the female in season.
There are doggie britches and sanitary pants that will aid in keeping the female's body drainage from spotting furniture, carpets, etc. in the house.
However, it should never be assumed these pants will keep a male dog from breeding her.
