Remove a tick from dogs
- There are several species of ticks that attach themselves to the dog.
- This parasite is a blood sucking creature that can be picked up in any grassy or wooded area.
- The most common spot to find ticks on a dog is around the head and ears.
- They can also be found any place on the body.
- Run your fingers over the skin, feeling for any abnormal lumps.
- A tick will be brownish or grey in color.
- It has 8 legs.
- The tick is easy to remove.
- Using a pair of forceps, tweezers, or your fingers, pull the tick away from the skin.
- Females will be larger and often blood filled.
- When you remove the tick, the entire tick comes off.
- It DOES NOT leave its head behind under any condition.
- Clean the area where the tick has been removed with alcohol.
- The area may be red and irritated because of the anticoagulant (in the saliva) that the tick has injected into the skin of the dog.
- This is NOT the head of the tick causing the problem.
- Watch for any fever after your dog has been infested with ticks.
- There are some good tick collars that help keep the ticks away.
