Take your Dog’s Temperature
Take your Dog’s Temperature
Taking a dog's temperature can be a safe procedure and provide needed information.
The dog by nature doesn't care to have anything stuck into the anus (which is where the thermometer has to go). Because of this, it is important not to attempt this procedure without two people working together.
The type of thermometer that a dog owner needs is a baby rectal thermometer or a digital display thermometer with a beep when ready.
There is also a need for a lubricant such as K/Y Jelly (R) or Vaseline (R). Apply a liberal amount of lubricant to the end of the thermometer (make sure you shake it done to below 99 degrees F). With one person holding the head of the dog, the other person inserts the thermometer into the middle of the anus penetrating about 1.5 inches.
Leave it in that position for 60 seconds (or until it beeps and remove). Normal readings: 101 to 102 degrees F.Subnomal readings: below 100 degrees F. (Make sure the thermometer was in long enough and deep enough into the anus)
Fever: above 102.5 degrees F. If the temperature is above 105 degrees F., refer to heat stroke or heat prostration.
