Trim Dog's Toenails
Trim Dog's Toenails
- Toenails need to be trimmed on a monthly basis for most breeds of dogs.
- The exception is the dog that runs on a hard surface daily.
- Toenails can lengthen to the extent that they grow into the pad.
- Longer nails tend to break easily which can be a painful experience.
- There are several types of trimmers designed specifically for the dog.
- The Resco (R) style trimmer can be used by almost anyone.
- Using a sliding action, the blade cuts the nail off in as small a portion as desired.
- You cut back until the soft area called the "quick" is found.
- At this point you stop.
- Until you become familiar with the use of the nail trimmer, leave the nails a little long.
- If you cut into the quick and bleeding starts, use the blood clotting powder (see First aid care kit) and apply this with pressure.
- Your dog WILL NOT ever bleed to death from bleeding toenails.
- The use of a bar of soap (dry) or baking soda can be used if the bleeding is minor.
- Start the nail trimming when your dog is a puppy.
- Make this a pleasant experience by rewarding your dog after each trimming.
- Using an electric nail grinder (found in pet catalogs) is helpful in shortening the nails with rounded edges.
- If you start early, the grinder is a safe and easy tool for you to use.
