Walking the dog on leash
Walking the dog on leash
- It is best to let the dog adjust to wearing a collar for a few days before you attach a leach to the collar.
- When you attach the leash, allow the dog to drag the leash around for a couple of days. This allows the dog to become accustomed to the added weight.
- Start out by using a treat or a toy to get the dog to follow you while on the leash.
- Give this some time with gentle pulls and a firm command to come along. Within a week you will have the dog accustomed to the procedure.
- For the dog that drags you down the street, hold the leash tightly with both hands against your stomach.
- Each time the dog goes out ahead of you quickly change directions.
- This is going to give the dog a sharp pop.
- Soon the dog will stop moving out ahead to avoid the "pop" action.
- If the dog continues to drag you, it may be time for some professional training.
- The professional will fit the dog with a good training choke chain.
- With a strong leash attached to the chain, you will be taught to be in command of your dog.
- The trainer will teach you how to get your dog's attention and listen to your commands.
- This may take 6 to 8 weeks but will be worth the time you spend in training your dog.
