Can't Keep the Dog in the Yard
I have a three year old neutered male that wes born to one of my female dogs. I am unable to keep him in the yard. Since he was about one, he jumps/climbs the chain link fence to go visiting other neighborhoods. So, now he has to be tied up when outside or he will be gone in less than 5 minutes. Is there any safe way to keep this dog in my yard besides tying him up all the time? When I tie him to his 50 foot dog run, all he does is run back and forth and bark, yip and just make a lot of noise. This bothers me, so I can only imagine what it does for the neighbors. So, I keep him in the house when I am here just so I don't have to listen to him. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am at my wit's end with this dog.
I feel that some dogs,(a very small percentage) are prone to this behavior. It can be corrected but it is going to take some work. This can be approached on a couple different angles. One, an obedience trainer. I would have an obedience trainer come to your home for an evaluation. This person can see the dog in action and determine what should be done. Second, you can install a dog run (which, as you mentioned you already have) for your pooch to use when he is outside. The dog run will provide the security that he needs plus the room to run around inside. When tying a dog up, it seems to be the start of bad behaviors like barking and aggressiveness. Training up a dog works in reverse and only adds to the problem. Try these suggestions and let me know how he is doing.
