Getting Spaniel to Defacate in Yard, Not Kennel
I have a Brittany Spaniel from a field trial bloodline. He is very hyper but overall listens well. Anyway, I recently have been putting him in a chainlink kennel when I go to work. I thought that he would be used to defecating in the yard (not the kennel) but so far this hasn't been the case. Do you have any advice for me that would have him defecate in the yard not in the kennel. He is 3 years old.
How long is he in the dog run? If he is in there for a long period of time then he will go in side the dog run. If you stay out side of the dog run with him and reward him for going he might get the idea. Does the dog run have grass in it like the yard? If so I feel that this could be a contributing factor.
Try to change his routine. See how long it takes him to go after he eats. Encourage him to go and then give him a treat reward and then put him in the run. It will take some retraining but I feel that you can accomplish it. Now keep in mind that if he is in there for long periods of time then I would rethink the training.
