Care for dogs ear flaps
The ear pina or flap is often injured or irritated because of its position on the head. When a dog gets into a fight, the ear flap can often be injured.
If this takes place, examine the ear carefully for any possible damage and take these steps:
- Clean the wound with mild soap and water.
- Flush the area with hydrogen peroxide.
- If there are multiple punctures or tears in the surface, your veterinarian should be notified of the injury.
- Keep the area clean and protected from flies and insects using Vaseline (R) and Off (R). A commercial product called Pet Guard (R) works.
- The pina can have other problems.
- Flies and fleas often go to this area to feed.
- You will see sores or raw areas that constantly irritate your dog.
The following suggestions help:
- Clean the sore area and apply Pet Guard (R) to the area 2 times per day.
- Use a bug trap or fly strips in the pet's outside area or dog house to reduce the insect population.
- Use an insect repellent on the dog such as the commercial product called Repel (R).
- Keep the dog inside a screened area when possible.
