Clean dogs anal glands
Clean dogs anal glands
Anal sacs are glands that are present on each side of the anal opening at 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock (remember the location). They are located between two muscle layers under the skin.
Like a small balloon, the neck of the gland empties into the anal opening. Not all dogs have trouble emptying these glands when they have a B.M. Dogs whose glands remain full, require some type of pressure to empty them.
- Scooting is the dog's way of applying that pressure. Sometimes this does not work and this dog may need your help.
- Expressing anal glands is best done by having one person secure the dog's head and hold tight.
- The other person lifts the tail with one hand leaving the other hand free to express the glands.
- Using a light layer of cotton covering the anus, pressure is applied to the outer edge of the sacs pushing inward and squeezing toward the openings in the anus.
- Sometimes the pressure is uncomfortable to the dog.
- If this procedure does not work for you, you may want to ask a local groomer or your veterinarian to teach you how to express anal glands.
