Clean dogs ear canals

Clean dogs ear canals

The ear canal is designed poorly in the dog. If water gets into the ear it does not drain out.

The canal has an opening that proceeds vertically (down) until it takes a right turn into a narrower section directed toward the head.

Because of its design, the ear is often found to be in need of cleaning and/or treatment. Parasites (ear mites) and infections are common in the ear canal.

It is important to follow ear care procedures:

  • Have the ears examined whenever your dog is seen by a veterinarian.
  • You should look in the ears on a weekly basis.
  • Keep the ears free of dirt and wax buildup.
  • Use a combination of 25% alcohol, 25% vinegar, and 50% water to flush the ears.
  • There are several commercial products that can be used.
  • Remove excessive hair or matted hair from the ear canal.
  • Some hair in the ears is OK. A pair of tweezers or Mosquito forceps (found in pharmacies or grooming catalogs) are helpful in removing and cleaning the canal.
  • If the ears have a sour odor, if they are sore to the touch, or if they just look red and/or inflamed (infected), it would be best to have your veterinarian examine the ears.
