11-month-old chocolate Labrador Retriever dash across to play with the other person
My question may appear simple, but it scares me every day. My wife and I have an 11-month-old chocolate Labrador Retriever who is well-trained in most areas except one. The area he needs help in is running when he sees something of interest. For example, we'll be playing in the yard when he notices someone walking across the street; immediately he'll dash across to play with the other person. We try yelling "no," "stop" and other words to grab his attention, but nothing seems to work. The reason we are so scared is we live on a busy street and we're afraid he's going to get hit by a car. It doesn't matter what we do, he always takes off after something he sees. I would love to get some ideas on how to stop him from running like this before we lose him.
This is simple; do not ever, under any circumstance, allow your dog to be outside off-lead. Obviously you can't trust his training, and in actuality he has learned your commands mean the opposite of what you intend, because he hears these words as he is running off. Now "No!" probably means "Go!" to your dog, who is in serious danger of being killed on the street. I can see this possibly happening once, to an owner who truly believed his ot her dog was reliable with off-lead obedience training. But when proved wrong by a runaway dog, no one who truly wants to protect his or her pet would chance it a second time. Keep him on a leash when outside, no matter what, and get him and yourselves enrolled in an obedience program. If you need to allow him off-lead freedom, do it in a friend's fenced yard or in an unoccupied tennis court (where dogs aren't prohibited). Consider investing in secure, dog-proof fencing for your own yard or be resigned never to allow him to be loose there again.
