Aggressive Dog Problems
I have a problem with my female 1.5 year old border collie/australian shepherd mix named Nikky. Nikky has recently become aggressive towards other dogs. I used to take her and her "sister" Natasha (siberian husky) to a dog park almost every day to ensure that she would be a healthy and socialized dog. She always played very rough but it all seemed in good jest. In the past two months she has growled and snapped at dogs, even some dogs that she used to get along with. I talked with a trainer briefly about it and he said that it was simply due to the fact that she is a herding dog and that she is maturing. I would appreciate it if you had any advice on the subject. Nikky is deaf, so it is a little bit more challenging to train her, (just so you know, though I don't think it is related to her aggressiveness.)
Several things can be taking place here. First, is she fixed? Good for you if she is already. If not have it done right away. This will help greatly. It sounds like she wants to be the dominator. How does she act with your other dog, Natasha? Is Nikki the dominate dog between the two? I bet she is. When she goes to the park she wants to dominate the other dogs. I do not want to say that the trainer that you talked with is wrong, but if what he said is true then all herding dogs would not get along. I would enroll her in obedience classes and you are going to have to use hand signals instead of voice commands. Once she has mastered your commands then I would take her back to the park and practice on her in front of the other dogs. When she gets rough you are going to have to get her to sit and stay. She has to realize that you are the top dog not her. Release her back to play after a couple of minutes and when acts up again then you repeat the process. Reward her good behavior and correct the bad behavior. When she does this all of the time she may associate what is going on. Try this and see if it works for you.
