8-week old mixed Labrador Retriever puppies suggestions for basic training
We have two 8-week old mixed Labrador Retriever puppies. They have an acre on the water to call home. How do I proceed with training them to stay in the yard without putting up an electronic fence? They will be neutered at 6 months or when our vet says it is time. They have a large pen and house to which they are confined unless we are outside. Any reading suggestions for basic training?
I suggest obedience training that teaches your dogs to stop and come on command. These concepts are best taught within a safely enclosed area. I strongly advise you wait until you are completely confident your puppies have matured into their training and are well past "testing" it before you trust them in an unfenced area. But I would not trust any training to keep them limited to your yard when you are not out there with them. That is when they should be safely and securely contained in their pen. Ask your veterinarian to refer you to local training programs based on positive reinforcement rather than punishment. There are many programs available that start teaching puppies from an early age how to do things the right way. This will help you prevent them from learning bad habits.
