Jack Russell Terrier that is obsessed with the television
I have an 8-year-old Jack Russell Terrier that is obsessed with the television. She does not sit nicely in front of it to watch but instead runs and jumps at it, circles, circles, circles, grunts and moans. It drives us insane! I have tried to direct her attention with other activities or toys, but the sounds and the movements on the television are just too intriguing for her. I also have tried correcting her and keeping a lead on her while she is in the house, but my other Jack (her daughter) pulls and yanks on her leash and causes more aggravation. Ugh!-What do we do?
TV time needs to be "quiet time" for both TV-addicted mother and training-sabotaging daughter dogs! Put both dogs on separate leashes before turning on the television. When they begin to misbehave in any way, shake a penny bottle (a small plastic pop bottle with 10 or so pennies in it) and give a slight leash correction. Do not acknowledge the dogs, however. The idea is, this is your time, so why allow inappropriate behavior from your dogs to draw your attention? That would have the opposite effect of what is desired, instead teaching them that inappropriate behavior earns an attention response! The objective while watching television is to teach your dogs they may be present, but must not compete for your attention. This is when television-not dogs-should be seen and heard. Provide each with a few toys or chewing objects, so when they get bored of being ignored and tired of receiving remote corrections for misbehavior, they quietly can entertain themselves.
