Teach dog boundaries

Teach dog boundaries

In the beginning of any training experience, the dog will learn more rapidly if it can see what it has to learn.

  • With visible boundaries, it is easier for the dog to learn.
  • You can do this with stakes, ribbons, wire, or flags.
  • For instance, we have trained our dog not to go into the living room.
  • Mark off the area you wish the dog to stay within.
  • Start by walking the dog on a leash towards the area.
  • When the dog crosses the marked boundary line, give your dog a verbal "no" and pop them with the leash (a sudden pull and release). When they get back to where they below, give verbal praise.
  • It is important to repeat this procedure at different places and at different times along the boundaries.
  • It may take weeks for some dogs and months for others to learn these boundaries.
  • It is important to be consistent with your training and never allow the dog to cross the boundaries.

If this fails, the following can be used:

  • An electric fence
  • An electric shock collar
  • An invisible fence
  • A shock foot pad
