Train pup to swim
Train pup to swim
- Teaching your dog to swim should be started as a puppy.
- It is probably better to start on a warm day when you can enter the water with the pup.
- You can start by playing "fetch" with the puppy at a short distance.
- Make sure the puppy can still feel the bottom when it is in the water.
- By gradually increasing the distance that the puppy has to go into the water for the retrieval, the puppy will gain confidence in the water.
- Do this for short periods being careful not to exhaust the puppy.
- If you have an older dog, the puppy can learn from it.
- You may have to carry the puppy out into the water a short distance and let the puppy swim back to shore.
- Remember to keep it short and fun.
- Not all dogs make good swimmers.
- If your dog tends to sink instead of swim, there are companies that make life jackets for dogs.
- Check with your local pet supply store for help.
