Removing a sticky substance from long fur
Let's face it, there is no way to avoid the occasional incident where your dog finds, tar, sap, chewing gum or paint. Unfortunately, clipping the fur is the only way to remove many of these substances completely. Here are some additional tips to help make the process easier.
1. Paint- Never use turpentine, gasoline, or any type of paint thinner or remover. These only irritate the dog's skin and strong smell can be VERY frightening. Instead, clip the paint out of the coat.
2. Tree Sap and Tar- Again clip the tar out of the fur. If there is excessive spread, try working some petroleum jelly into the tar. Wipe with rag and repeat until all tar has been removed. Make sure your dog doesn't eat the tar.
3. Chewing Gum- Apply ice to the gum to eliminate stickiness. Gently clip the affected area. Don't let your dog eat the gum.
One of the best ways, that I have found, to take gum out of ANYTHING, including fur, is Shaklee's 'Basic H'. It's safe to use on & around Pets & People. All you do is, put drops of 'Basic H' on and around the gum. Rub it in as best you can. Wait 10 to 15 min. It softens the gum and takes away the sticky. Then you can easily pull the gum out without cutting the fur or hurting the animal. Then just rinse the spot to remove any excess 'Basic H'. Try it. It really does work.
Another great way to remove any sticky substance from your dog's fur is with "Goop," a well know hand cleaner used by mechanics. Keep this tip to yourself or you'll never have any Goop around when you need it.
