Preventing Hand Chewing
Preventing Hand Chewing
Do you have a dog that likes to chew on your hands? Don't misunderstand this action. Often dogs will chew on your hands to get your attention and they are actually complimenting you when doing it. They certainly wouldn't chew on the hand of someone that they don't trust. Still, some people find this behavior annoying and it can be easily fixed. When your dog chews on your hand, place your first two fingers, palm down on their tongue and push them back far enough to cause a gagging reflex. This should cause your dog to immediately release your hand. As you do this action, also offer a verbal command such as "No" or "Stop". Eventually your dog will associate the verbal command with the undesirable behavior and stop the behavior on the verbal command alone. Remember that praise is important in training and should be offered to your dog as soon as they drop your hand.
