What you can do about pet dental disease?
First, have your pet examined by your veterinarian. Here at the Animal Hospital, a dental check up is part of your pet's yearly physical examination. Your veterinarian will point out any changes in your pet's dental health. For example, he or she may see red or bleeding gums, excess plaque or tartar accumulation, tooth abscess, gum erosion's or even oral tumors.
If it is indicated, your veterinarian will recommend a dental cleaning (prophylaxis) and any other procedures necessary to improve or correct your pet's dental problems.
After dental cleaning, you should consider some form of home dental care for your pet. Ideally, pets should have their teeth brushed daily. Some animals may be more amenable to an oral gel or even special diets formulated to clean teeth and gums.
