How do you clean an animal's teeth before anesthesia for dental procedures?
At Animal Hospital, all animals are under anesthesia for dental procedures. This allows for a thorough, pain-free dental scaling, extractions if necessary and other procedures such as fluoride treatments (which take 5 minutes) and dental radiographs. For questions about anesthesia, see What is anesthesia for dental procedures.
The veterinary technician will scale the crowns and clean under the gum line just like you have done in the dentist's office. When they are done, a polishing paste is applied in order to smooth the surface so that plaque and tartar don't adhere as easily to the tooth surface. The veterinarian checks the entire oral cavity and performs any necessary procedures. Your pet will wake up within 10 minutes of the end of the anesthetic administration and can go home the same day.
