COCCIDIA
COCCIDIA
This group of protozoa live and reproduce within the walls of the intestine. They form "eggs", called oocysts, that are passed in the feces. These eggs are extremely small and can only be identified under high power with a microscope. A cat becomes infected when it ingests infected fecal material - either on grass blades or from soiled fur while grooming. There is some new evidence to suggest that cats can also become infected by consuming infected prey (ie. rodents or rabbits). Coccidian oocysts are not shed constantly and tend to be shed in small numbers, making diagnosis difficult.
