Isospora felis

Isospora felis

This is a common coccidian parasite of kittens and puppies, especially those exposed to large numbers of oocysts in the environment. We see them most frequently in animals purchased from pet stores or puppy mills. Infected individuals may have no clinical signs, but often come to us with severe, bloody diarrhea, constant straining to defecate, abdominal pain (groaning), dehydration, stunting and loss of body weight and hair condition. These kittens can become anemic, weak and unable to rise. Some of these kittens will strain so badly that their rectum actually protrudes out through the anal opening (a condition called rectal prolapse). Treatment is antibiotics for 5-14 days. Kittens that are dehydrated will need fluid and nutritional support.
